Jules Grévy



Born in 1807 with Mount-under-Vaudrey (the Jura). Died in 1891 with Mount-under-Vaudrey, where it is buried.

Political life :
President of the Republic of January 30, 1879 to December 2, 1887 (not of other candidate).

1879 - Grévy amendment on the erasure of the President.
1880 - Amnesty communards (Louise Michel).
Adoption of the Tricolour, July 14 like national festival and " the Marseillaise " like national anthem.
         - Re-establishment of the divorce.
1881 - Laws on teaching primary - free, obligatory and laic (Jules Ferry).
         - Right to meet and freedom of the press.
         - Protectorate on Tunisia.
1883 - Protectorate on Annam (Tonkin) .
1884 - Law on the communes - election of the mayors by the town councils.
1885 - Re-election in December of Jules Grévy (other candidate : Henri Brisson).
1887 - Beginning of construction of the Eiffel Tower.
         - Scandal of decorations (Daniel Wilson, son-in-law of the President) which involves, December 2, the resignation of Présidentde the Republic.
