The deforestation of Provence

Provence was victim of massive deforestations, carried out either to supply the lime kilns, or to provide the arsenal of Marseilles, but especially the arsenal of Toulon.
Arsenal of Toulon
The maritime pine, which pushes there preferably today, was introduced there only at the beginning of XIXe century; one saw there in the past the umbrella pine providing these pinions which remain at the base of the exquisite pastry making of Aix-en-Provence (in particular famous calissons), and also the oak, and these gasolines which one finds today only in the forest of Sainte-Baume.

- Provence, at that time, offered a splendid landscape, much more timbered, one could make besides the same remark for France. Everywhere in France there was large forest, it remains us days only some vestiges, which one can still see at the edges of the fields. The hedges which delimit them are the remainders rachitics of our beautiful forests. These forests caused many legends, fear of the wolf, the animal of Gévodan, the tales for child, " the Little Red Riding Hood of Charles Perrault "... Then when nowadays I hear that such or such country deforests with excess I think that we do not have anything to say, we made, alas, similar one day!
