The Transporter bridge
On the way for the crossing...

The purpose of the idea to build a bridge connecting two banks of the port was to avoid with the vehicles and the pedestrians the long turnings while following the quays.
Since 1899 one asked engineer Arnodin to consider the construction of a type of bridge in which he was a specialist: the transporter bridge.
In 1903, work commencèrent.La brought into service was made on December 24 1905.Sur each bank are installed two metal pylons of approximately 80 meters height, forming a gantry. Between these gantries, at about fifty meters to the top of the water level a supported horizontal apron, a such suspension bridge is fixed, by cables taking support at the top of the gantries.
On this apron, equipped with rails, can circulate thanks to an electric motor, a kind of flat carriage. This carriage, is also suspended by cables, a floor forming nacelle, almost with the short-nap cloth of the eau.C' is on this nacelle, which take seat vehicles and passengers wishing to go on the bank opposée.Il are thus "transhipped" on one side to the autre. Le August 22, 1944, the northern part was destroyed by an explosive load placed by the German troops. The other part, side careenage, were destroyed by a crane with vapor.
