Project of the Southern Port of Marseilles
If projects of the famous southern Ports, elaborate with much the serious one to leave de1827 to relieve congestion the unhappy Old Port then reached a state of almost catastrophic saturation, then, in 1867, after the opening of the basins of vieux Port
Joliette, of the Lazaret and Arenc, and even in 1880, had led, all the aspect of the district of Prado such as we know it today would have been completely transformed.
Let us not speak about the Corréard project of 1827 which did not foresee anything less than one broad channel which, of the range of Prado, would have literally encircled the Périer hill / Our-Lady of the Guard to succeed, on the site first branch Prado, with a long basin with docks - the basin of Castellane - and to join the Port-Old man finally by roughly borrowing the lower layout of the street Breteuil !
But let us adopt only the last project in date, approved by the Communal Assembly in 1880 and considering, quite simply, the digging of a basin of 65 hectares with 10 kilometers of quays, fascinating birth with the mouth of Huveaune and energy to join, by the low plain close to Prado and the boulevard Rabateau, the industrial district of Capelette! Fortunately, at that time, choices of the Chamber of Commerce, which envisaged already the boring of Channel of Rove and the use of the Pond of Berre, were directed clearly towards the Northern extension of the Ports. That was going to save Prado.
With nearly eighty years in advance, the harbour future of Marseilles opened in direction of Fos.
